~Revolutionary War Gravesites in McLean County~

Francis was born in Pennsylvania in 1760 and served with the New Jersey regiment. He and a son, William, came to Blooming Grove in 1824. The Hodges were one of the first settlers of European descent in McLean County, settling in Blooming Grove when there were only 3 or 4 families and, according to William, only about 15 families in all of McLean County (excluding Native Americans, presumably).

The family had moved west from North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and eventually Sangamon County, IL in 1820. William was likely the second teacher in McLean County, the first being Delilah Mullen, and the first teacher in Bloomington, opening a school at the corner of Main and Olive. William also served as sheriff and school trustee. Francis died in 1840.
