A more comprehensive biography of David Haggard was written by Lisa Dretske for the McLean County Historical Society. Haggard could trace his family lineage to 15th century England. He was born in 1764 in Albemarle County, VA and fought in the Battle of Yorktown and was present as Cornwallis's surrender.

After the war, David married Nancy Dawson and eventually had 10 children. They moved to Kentucky in 1788 and Bloomington in 1836. They lived at 319 South Center St., just north of the Constitutional Trail. Like many elderly war veterans who moved to McLean County, Haggard might have moved to Bloomington to be close to his adult children.

Haggard died in 1844. His wife died between 1850 and 1860, but I could not locate a gravesite for her. Haggard's daughter, Martha married John Routt in Kentucky. Their son, John Routt, Jr., served several terms as governor of Colorado.
